Why We Built Falcon Health
A/Prof. Dr Shihab Hameed is a Paediatric Endocrinologist who has been a medical practitioner for more than 20 years. Like every clinician, he knows the particular strain of sitting with a patient while part of his mind is already elsewhere - rehearsing the letter still to be written, aware of the waiting room filling up outside. That split attention has a real cost: it pulls a clinician away from the person in front of them, at exactly the moment they need to be fully present.
He recognised that the tools available to clinicians were never designed around the full workflow of clinical care - documentation, referrals, follow-up - in a way that lets a clinician give each patient their undivided attention. He started building Falcon Health because he wanted clinicians to be able to look a patient in the eye without half their mind already on the next task.
Head of Department, Royal North Shore Hospital
A/Prof. Hameed has been a Staff Specialist Paediatric Endocrinologist at Royal North Shore Hospital since 2016, and Head of its Department of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes since 2022. He has also worked at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, since 2005, where he is now a Senior Staff Specialist Paediatric Endocrinologist.
His leadership extends beyond his own department: he has served as Acting Clinical Director of the Division of Women’s, Children’s and Family Health at Royal North Shore Hospital, and is one of twelve members of the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network’s Clinical Service Planning Steering Group, developing the network’s clinical service plan across Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. He has also been selected as an expert advisor to the Federal Minister for Health and the Therapeutic Goods Administration, and is a member of the Northern Sydney Local Health District’s AI Community of Practice.
He holds academic appointments as Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney’s Northern Clinical School and Conjoint Senior Lecturer at the University of New South Wales, and is Clinical Stream Lead for North Star Sydney Trials and Research (Clinical Genetics and Paediatrics). He is an RACP Approved Supervisor, training the next generation of specialists in paediatrics and paediatric endocrinology, and supervises clinicians and researchers across multiple institutions. Teaching and advocacy for children living with endocrine and metabolic conditions remain central to his work alongside clinical practice.
He holds a PhD from UNSW (2017, “Monogenic and Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes in Childhood”), Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Paediatric Endocrinology (2010), and MBBS with Honours from UNSW (2002). He is a registered medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Research that changes clinical practice
A/Prof. Hameed led CF-IDEA, an NHMRC-funded international multicentre randomised controlled trial spanning five Australian children’s hospitals and the University of Colorado, investigating early insulin therapy in cystic fibrosis-related diabetes. Its results were published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health in 2025.
He was invited to author the International Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) Clinical Practice Consensus Guidelines on the management of cystic fibrosis-related diabetes in children and adolescents, in both their 2018 and 2022 editions, and has co-authored the UpToDate clinical reference chapter on the same topic since 2022. His research has been published in journals including the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, Diabetes Care and Pediatric Diabetes, across more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and 3 book chapters.
Advising on national clinical policy
In 2026, A/Prof. Hameed was selected as expert advisor to Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) on an application for teplizumab to delay the onset of type 1 diabetes, which was subsequently approved. The same year, he was invited by the editorial board of Frontiers in Endocrinology to guest-edit a special issue on disease-modifying agents and adjunctive therapies for people living with type 1 diabetes.
His early research on cystic fibrosis-related diabetes received the ANZPED Emerging Investigator Award (2009), and he continues to be an active member of the Australia New Zealand Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (ANZSPED).
